Making the world podium
Fresh off their second consecutive Canadian National senior pairs victory, Meagan Duhamel, of Lively, and skating partner Eric Radford, of Bowmanville, handily captured the gold medal at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in February in Osaka, Japan. The icing on the season’s cake, however, was their bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario in March.
The success of the duo came as no surprise to the local figure skating community, and certainly not to Duhamel’s home club in Walden. In fact, skaters from the Walden club got together to watch the pair electrify the capacity crowd at Budweiser Gardens for the long program, and joined in celebrating their success.
Through the year, Duhamel and Radford never lost sight of their goals for the season — a place on the podium at the World Championships and helping to secure three spots for Canada in the pairs event at the 2014 Winter Olympics. They proudly accomplished those goals — a feat that made headlines across the country.
What’s next for the dynamic duo? They have a busy time ahead, with the World Team Trophy event in Tokyo, which ran April 11-14, and then a cross-country tour with Stars On Ice, which wraps up May 10 in Vancouver. Check out their tour dates at starsonice.ca.
Trying to get them home for a visit and a celebration of their season’s successes is high on everyone’s wish list right now. Plans are underway for a community celebration that is tentatively slated for mid-May.
